Congress to consider redefining professional development in ESEA

December 22 2009 by Tom Manning

In the coming weeks, Congress will consider two important pieces of legislation that could have a major impact on professional learning in this country.
οΎ
Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) will introduce the "Teacher and Principal Improvement Act," and Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) will sponsor the "Great Teachers for Great Schools Act." Each of these proposed bills replace the current definition of professional development in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act with one that aligns with NSDC's own definition of, and vision for, effective professional development.

We ask that you take some time to write to your representatives in the Senate and House, urging them to support these important bills. We've set up a page on our web site designed to assist you in writing your representatives in the U.S. House and Senate in support of this legislation.

Please post a comment on the blog to let us know that you've taken advantage of this opportunity to advocate for professional learning.

Tom Manning is NSDC's associate director of member experience.
